Last week’s episode (S2 Ep4) of Masters of Sex pulled at my therapist heart strings.
Betty is a former prostitute who married a very wealthy man (Gene). Now, Betty spends her time trying to appear perfect to him. The only problem is that Gene knew Betty before Betty knew Gene.
In the last episode he admitted to her that he was once her john before he ran into at church service, where she believed they had met. He saw her. He really saw her. And, he loved her anyway. The worst part was that she didn’t know it and that affected her ability to trust him. She has been wearing a mask this whole time.
How many times in our lives do we protect ourselves from acquaintances, colleagues, friends, family, significant others, and even ourselves? Our fear of how others will respond to us prevents from opening up and sharing our true selves.
There is freedom and beauty in learning to truly be yourself.
Let me come alongside you as you shed your vulnerabilities and embrace your authentic self.
